President Trump is ordering a major reduction in joint U.S.-South Korea military exercises, saying the drills are too costly and send a "totally inappropriate and hostile" signal to Kim Jong Un's North Korea.
The timing is striking: Trump's directive comes one day before the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise is set to begin, involving roughly 18,000 South Korean troops alongside U.S. forces. About 28,500 American service members are stationed in South Korea.
President Trump also pointed out that South Korea recently said "no thanks" to joining the U.S. in the "denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran."
It also follows two North Korean ballistic missile launches within six days this month.
