US SENDING USS GEORGE WASHINGTON TO MIDDLE EAST TO REPLACE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN
The carrier rotation was planned before concerns were raised about conditions aboard the Lincoln, a US official tells the WSJ. The Lincoln has been deployed more than 250 days without a port call in 200, a record for consecutive days at sea, per Sen. Richard Blumenthal.
The Lincoln deployed in November, was redirected to the Middle East in January ahead of the war with Iran, and its aircraft were central to the Operation Epic Fury bombing campaign. It has since participated in the blockade of Iranian ports.
Blumenthal, in a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, cited reports of shortages of basic supplies, water contamination, plumbing issues and deteriorating mental health aboard the ship. The Navy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The George Washington is based in Japan and transited the Strait of Malacca this week alongside guided-missile destroyers.
