CFTC Chair: Binance Hack Once Again Shows Offshore Exchanges Need U.S. Regulation
On December 30, 2026, CFTC Chair Michael Selig @ChairmanSelig said in an interview that the Binance hack highlighted the lack of safeguards at offshore crypto exchanges equivalent to those in U.S. financial markets. He called for an optional federal registration pathway for platforms, requiring them to meet corresponding cybersecurity standards.
He said the attack did not target the blockchain itself or on-chain contracts, adding that the traceability of on-chain transactions could also aid regulators.
