"We were a step away; we still are"
Last Sunday, late in the evening, a series of meetings and phone calls took place between sources with knowledge of what was happening in the defense establishment and several senior members of the Change Bloc parties. They raised concerns about a coup that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was trying to promote – an operation in Iran "that is not necessarily an air strike," as one of the sources defined it.
But it's not over. "We were a step away and we're still there," says a senior military official who is familiar with the preparations made in Israel in recent months for a possible attack on Iran. "Think about what it would be like to form a government in the middle of a war with Iran," he adds.
The words were spoken two days before the elections, when it was not yet clear how complex their results would be. But even in the face of a simpler scenario, the senior official was very concerned about what might happen precisely after Israelis finish voting. *For him, that's where the more dangerous phase may begin. Now, at the end of the vote, it is estimated that there is a high probability of another Israeli-American attack on Iran. The window of possibilities discussed is the first or second week of November, after the midterm elections that will be held this coming Tuesday.* The exact date, if any, has not yet been finalized, and military preparations could also be used as leverage in negotiations to form a government, but the danger does not disappear if the planes take off after the ballots have been put in the envelopes.
