Oracles are the hidden choke point of smart contracts. Every lending protocol, algorithmic stablecoin, and on-chain prediction market depends on them, yet most rely on a single point of failure.
Smart contracts are self-contained. They can't reach out to the internet, so to act on real-world events like a price change or an election result, they need an oracle to tell them what happened.
The question nobody asks:
how is the oracle fetching data?
If the answer is a single company, a whitelist of approved nodes, or a team with admin keys, you've replaced one trusted third party with another. Decentralization stops at the oracle layer.
Tellor's answer is simpler: anyone can report. Anyone can dispute. The network's economic incentives do the work that trust used to do.
The oracle layer is a design choice. What's yours?
