What’s next following the Starknet L1 vote?
The Starknet community has voted in favor of researching whether Starknet should become an independent post-quantum L1. The non-binding Snapshot poll ran from October 15 to October 22, 2026, and was open to STRK stakers and delegators.
Final Result: 93.52% of voting power in favor, 3,236 votes cast.
With this outcome, StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation have launched a working group to research and draft a white paper and offer a detailed proposal. The vote measured community interest in Starknet becoming an L1. There will be a formal governance process before any such decision is made.
Why this matters now
As an Ethereum L2, Starknet relies on Ethereum for parts of its stack, including the bridge and data availability. Both rely on quantum-vulnerable elliptic curve cryptography, which means that Starknet can only become quantum resistant on Ethereum’s timeline, slated for 2029.
The parts Starknet controls are further along. Starknet’s STARK proofs rely on post-quantum secure hash functions rather than elliptic curves. Additionally, native account abstraction lets user accounts adopt post-quantum signatures without a protocol upgrade.
Starknet as an independent L1 would remove its dependency on Ethereum’s migration schedule. The Quantum Hub details Starknet’s quantum-safety roadmap, including current status and what remains, surface by surface, for it to become fully quantum secure with a target set in 2027.
What happens next
The working group will share updates as its research progresses, including answers to the questions raised in the forum thread.
The working group’s first major output will be a white paper, which will be released in the coming weeks. A detailed proposal and further community votes will follow it.
In the meantime, if you run infrastructure, build on Starknet or hold STRK, the forum thread is the place to raise the questions you need answered.
