Why Does Aave's Expansion Matter for Avalanche and BENQI? Welcome to Freshman Questions, a BENQI educational series designed to help make Avalanche and decentralized finance easier to understand for new users. 🔺 Aave's announced V4 expansion, a first on Avalanche, is yet another sign that Avalanche has become default infrastructure for a much larger financial system. This development became particularly apparent following Avalanche Summit with what Aave founder and CEO Stani Kulechov had to say at TOKEN2049 Singapore in October 2026. At TOKEN2049, Stani participated in a discussion entitled DeFi's Institutional Breakthrough, alongside leaders from Ethena and Synthetix/Infinex. This breakthrough message made it clear: decentralized finance has moved with foresight beyond crypto-native applications through infrastructure enabled support for the large panoply of traditional financial assets on-chain, into on-chain institutional lending, other capital markets and use-cases beyond. What Is Aave Expanding on Avalanche? Aave is a decentralized lending and borrowing protocol. Like BENQI Markets, it connects capital suppliers with borrowers through smart contracts. Aave has operated on Avalanche since 2021, but its July 2026 V4 deployment introduced a new approach to lending infrastructure. Aave V4 uses a Hub and Spoke architecture , with a core liquidity hub providing shared liquidity to multiple specialized markets. Think of it as a shared pool of liquidity connected to specialized lending markets. Instead of every market requiring entirely separate liquidity, different markets can draw from a common liquidity hub while maintaining distinct borrowing rules and risk parameters. Aave's initial Avalanche deployment includes: Main Market: General-purpose lending and borrowing across a broader set of assets. AVAX Correlated Market: Specialized lending involving AVAX-related assets, including sAVAX and WAVAX. Forex Market: Lending and borrowing involving supported fiat-pegged stablecoins. The architecture is designed to improve capital efficiency while accommodating and optimizing for different financial needs. It is less now about liquidity and more about market structures. And this is particularly relevant in Avalanche's current stage of deployed development. What Did Stani Kulechov Say at TOKEN2049? At TOKEN2049 Singapore, Kulechov's participation in DeFi's Institutional Breakthrough reinforced a theme that has become central to Aave's direction. DeFi isn't necessarily destined to remain a separate financial niche. It increasingly becomes part of the infrastructure, distribution, and markets through which traditional finance operates. Kulechov has argued that on-chain credit and finance needs to think beyond today's relatively small crypto-native markets. The opportunity includes institutional credit, tokenized securities, real-world assets, and financial activity involving far larger pools of capital. This represents an important shift as users everywhere tap into network effects. Early DeFi focused heavily on enabling crypto holders to trade, lend, borrow, and earn yield. Now people want to know… What happens when traditional financial assets begin using the same infrastructure? Imagine tokenized investment funds, credit instruments, and other securities moving through on-chain financial markets. Those assets need more than digital representations. They need liquidity. They need collateral frameworks. They need borrowing markets. And they need systems capable of managing different financial risks. That's why Aave's emphasis on institutional lending and real-world assets matters. It is no coincidence that Aave has expanded on Avalanche. It's about building the cultural and technical structures for a potentially much larger financial system, that was built originally to tokenize finance and digitize all the world’s assets. How Does Aave's Expansion Create More Utility for sAVAX? Here's one of the most concrete foundational connections between Aave's Avalanche expansion and BENQI. Aave V4's Avalanche deployment includes an AVAX Correlated Market that supports sAVAX as collateral for borrowing wrapped AVAX. Consider what that means. Step 1: A user stakes AVAX through BENQI Liquid Staking. Step 2: The user receives sAVAX representing the underlying staking position. Step 3: The underlying AVAX continues participating in Avalanche staking. Step 4: The user can potentially supply sAVAX as collateral in Aave's supported market expanded beyond what was possible in V3. That's a practical example of DeFi composability. One protocol creates a useful financial asset. Another protocol builds additional financial functionality around it. The result is more potential utility for the original asset. The point here is that sAVAX utility can extend beyond what it concurrently is. More collateral. More borrowing demand. This larger Avalanche DeFi ecosystem can create more opportunities for liquid staking assets to participate in financial activity. Why Does This Matter for Avalanche? Aave has announced plans for additional real-world asset credit infrastructure on Avalanche. That initiative could help connect tokenized assets with borrowing and liquidity services, subject to the market's eventual launch and eligibility requirements. Tokenization brings assets on-chain. Lending infrastructure helps make those assets financially useful. Avalanche has both sides of that functionality already developing within its ecosystem. BENQI has been part of this Avalanche's DeFi infrastructure since it's earliest development. Its products address several aspects of this productive capital deployment. BENQI Liquid Staking allows AVAX holders to participate in staking while receiving sAVAX, a liquid representation of their staking position. BENQI Core Markets provide lending and borrowing infrastructure for supported digital assets. That is productive finance in action, actualized by traditional finance well beyond the original manifestation of purely degen defi on-chain. And as Avalanche's lending ecosystem grows, the opportunities for those assets to interact with other protocols can grow too. Kulechov's broader vision emphasizes making on-chain financial markets capable of supporting much larger pools of capital. Why This Matters Aave's expansion on Avalanche is significant because it connects several trends. Avalanche is attracting more institutional financial activity. Aave is developing lending infrastructure for increasingly sophisticated credit markets. BENQI continues to provide liquid staking, lending, borrowing, and validator-related infrastructure. And sAVAX is an example of how an asset created by one protocol can become useful within another. These advances illustrate how Avalanche's DeFi infrastructure is becoming more interconnected. The opportunity isn't simply to bring more capital onchain. It's to make that capital more useful now that it has arrived. Adoption continues… Next Step If you hold AVAX or sAVAX, explore how the different lending markets on Avalanche work. Start by understanding BENQI Liquid Staking and how sAVAX represents staked AVAX. Then look at the growing number of applications supporting sAVAX, including Aave's AVAX Correlated Market. Compare liquidity, collateral requirements, borrowing costs, and liquidation risks before using any lending strategy. And remember: The value of a growing DeFi ecosystem isn't just more places to put capital. It's more ways for capital to become productive. Got another Freshman Question you'd like us to cover?
