➥ @Cloudflare could be one of the biggest catalysts for x402. The reason is simple: x402 is turning HTTP requests into payment requests. An agent wants an API, dataset, model inference or MCP tool. It sends a request. ✦ The server responds: 402 — Payment Required. The response tells the agent what to pay, which asset/network to use and where to send it. The agent signs the payment, retries the request and gets access. No account. No API key. No checkout page. No human approval for every transaction. Just request → pay → receive. That sounds small, but it changes how the internet can charge for services. And the numbers are already getting interesting. The official x402 dashboard currently shows 75.4M transactions and $24.2M in volume over the last 30 days, with 94K+ buyers and 22K sellers. But the bigger catalyst, imo, is Cloudflare. Cloudflare has integrated x402 into its agent infrastructure and AI Gateway. Its Monetization Gateway can put x402 payments in front of APIs, datasets, websites and MCP tools. Cloudflare also recently added Machine Payments to AI Gateway, allowing eligible inference requests to be paid through x402 using stablecoins. This matters because Cloudflare already sits in front of a huge amount of internet traffic. If x402 becomes the payment layer for even a small portion of that traffic, the potential transaction count is very different from a normal crypto payment market. And there is another important development: x402 is no longer just a Coinbase experiment. The protocol was contributed to the Linux Foundation in 2026, with the x402 Foundation now operating as an open-governance body. More than 50 organizations are involved. So I think the thesis is becoming clearer: AI agents need a native way to buy things. They will need: → data → API calls → model inference → compute → storage → identity/reputation → other agents' services Subscriptions and API keys were designed for humans and traditional software. x402 is designed around the opposite model: machine-to-machine commerce. That is why I am watching the ecosystem beyond just the x402 token narratives. ✦ My x402 watchlist: > @virtuals_io — Most liquid: AI agents + agent jobs + payment rails via Virtuals’ ACP ecosystem. > @GoKiteAI — Agent-first L1 with native x402 + AP2; $KITE is mainly for network/incentives, not payments. > @Unibase_AI - $UB — Infra: Unibase Pay on x402 lets agents discover services, pay, and fetch data across BNB Chain, Base, Polygon, and Arbitrum. > @bankrbot - $BANKR — Base-native agent already doing onchain actions; clear proof of autonomous spend. > @openservai - $SERV — Agent infra: find work, run tasks, get paid as x402 adoption grows. > @PayAINetwork - $PAYAI — Purest x402 bet: multi-chain, expanding to SKALE; smaller liquidity/market cap = higher risk. > @eigencloud - $EIGEN — Complements x402: EigenCloud verifiable compute to prove agents got what they paid for. > @peaq - $PEAQ — Machine economy bet: devices pay for data/services and M2M. > @flock_io - $FLOCK — x402 angle: decentralized AI training could push metered, machine-paid work. > @SkaleNetwork - $SKL — x402 fit: gasless, high-frequency tx for micro-payments and API calls. > @Acurast - $ACU — x402-native: agents buy compute per task, no subscriptions. ✦ The bigger thesis I don't think the x402 opportunity is simply: “AI agents will use crypto payments.” It is bigger than that. It is: - Every API can become a marketplace. - Every model can charge per inference. - Every dataset can charge per query. - Every compute provider can charge per task. - Every agent can become a buyer. - And every service can become programmable. Cloudflare is important because it can put that payment primitive directly at the edge of the internet. If x402 keeps growing from here, I would watch actual settlement, active buyers, recurring sellers, and economic volume much more closely than raw transaction counts. Because eventually the question won’t be: “Can agents pay?” It will be: “How much of the internet is being paid for by machines?”(Historical earnings: For 2026Q3 (period ended 2026-04-03), Sandisk reported basic EPS of 30.82, diluted EPS of 29.42, and net income of USD 4.530 billion.
