Ethereum Researcher Warns AI Could Break Crypto Wallet Security Before Quantum Computers Do
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the crypto industry to prepare for "bunker mode," warning that advances in AI and mathematics could potentially break ECDSA within months rather than years, even before quantum computers become a threat.
He recommended gradually moving assets to fresh addresses with unexposed public keys and rotating keys after signing transactions, while cautioning against panic or rushed migrations. Drake also urged major institutions to strengthen cold storage security, critical signers to consider hash-based signatures such as SPHINCS, and Ethereum developers to accelerate the transition toward hash-based cryptography.
