🇺🇸🇨🇳The White House said President Trump and First Lady Melania hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan this week for a reciprocal state visit designed to advance a fair and reciprocal U.S.–China relationship.
On counternarcotics, the administration welcomed China’s scheduling of orphines and new export controls on two fentanyl-precursor chemicals, noted the August 2026 arrest of 21 Chinese nationals for precursor trafficking, and urged maximum penalties including the death penalty where applicable.
Trump also urged Xi to increase refined petroleum output to stabilize global supply, and the United States welcomed China’s lease of two giant pandas to the Atlanta Zoo. The two leaders operationalized the U.S.–China Board of Trade and Board of Investment chartered at the May 2026 Beijing summit to manage tariff, market-access and investment issues.
Under the Board of Trade, both sides agreed to recommend more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction, covering U.S. agricultural, seafood, wood, cosmetics and medical-device exports and Chinese appliances, toys, holiday goods and child car seats, plus an agricultural market-access working group.
China committed to import at least 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in 2027 and 2028, while both governments said they are working to return rare-earth and other critical-mineral shipments to appropriate levels.
The Board of Investment will serve as a structured channel for investment opportunities and impediments, addressing commercially meaningful investment issues between the two countries.
On security, the leaders discussed Russia, North Korea and Iran, reaffirmed that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon, opposed any tolls on international waterways, and pledged constructive strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
They agreed to support each other’s G20 and APEC summits with mutual attendance, recalled their World War II alliance, and called for trilateral U.S.–Russia–China arms-control negotiations.
On technology, both sides adopted “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence,” established a U.S.–China Super Intelligence Dialogue with the next exchange by November 2026, and created a bilateral channel for SI incidents.
