1/2 On July 25, U.S. forces conducted a verification boarding of the oil/chemical tanker Charminar (9318022) in the Arabian Sea. This sanctioned tanker is linked to Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani’s network. The tanker continued its journey. The incident is now on the @WashInstitute map, which tracks maritime attacks and incidents in the MENA region since 2017.
The Shamkhani network employs Iranian and foreign nationals and firms to conduct sanctions-evasion schemes, according to the State Department and U.S. Treasury. "It uses offshore shell companies, critical to the network’s ability, to trade sanctioned goods and recover the proceeds of those trades."
I created the video below to show you how to look for this tanker on the interactive map, as well as other incidents such as the one involving the LPG tanker Disha (8818219) that U.S. forces disabled on July 24 around 20 nautical miles south of Bandar Sirik, Iran, according to Ambrey. This U.S.-sanctioned tanker is reportedly linked to Houthi financial official Sa’id al-Jamal.
