#India’s state-owned Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd. is seeking crude cargoes that sidestep the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
The refiner is looking for as many as 1 million barrels for delivery until early September to New Mangalore port on the southwestern coast, according to a tender document seen by Bloomberg. Nearly 300 crude grades are eligible under the tender, including some Middle Eastern varieties, which could face loading disruptions due to the US-Iran hostilities.
Refiners in India, the world’s third-largest crude importer, are racing to secure alternative supplies amid uncertainty over the timely arrival of Middle Eastern cargoes. The Red Sea had emerged as a vital alternative for crude unable to pass through Hormuz. But, attacks by Tehran-backed Houthi militants on ships have now put that route at risk as well.

Shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the southern gateway to the Red Sea and a key maritime chokepoint like the Strait of Hormuz, dropped to its lowest level in months on Sunday after Iran's Houthi rebel allies in Yemen traded fire with Saudi Arabia, according to shipping intelligence firm Kpler.
The Houthis attacked oil installations along Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast on Saturday and said their blockade of Saudi ports would remain in effect. The Houthis imposed their blockade last week in response to Saudi attacks on their infrastructure.
Traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb had increased last week, as an alternative route for energy products with the Strait of Hormuz largely gridlocked, but Sunday saw only 11 commodity ships transit the passage, which Kpler said was the lowest level in months.
The disruption to shipping through both straits caused oil prices to jump sharply last week, though the lull in fighting between Iran and the U.S. over the weekend has seen the cost of crude fall again.
Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has not rebounded.

These are the ones to watch amid the Houthi threat, which should not be underestimated. On Friday, July 24, a Saudi-flagged vessel "witnessed a splash from an unknown projectile in close proximity" to it, based on a JMIC report. The vessel and crew were reported safe.
In addition to these empty oil tankers ( not posting names) that will be watched to see how they will transit the Red Sea, at least one Saudi-flagged container ship has paused its voyage in the Gulf of Aden and has been off Salalah, Oman, for some days now. This vessel is linked to a Saudi maritime feeder and liner services.
Some tankers carrying Saudi crude have recently transited the Bab al-Mandeb (BaM) normally heading to Asia. The main targets for the Yemeni group are vessels linked to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
