What we know so far: some of our backend infrastructure was compromised via a vulnerability in a self hosted app. Attackers were likely able to compromise our customer support inbox. They were also able to send emails that appeared to be legitimate. Within 10 minutes of user reports, we shut down attackers’ ability to send emails and booted them off our systems. For a subset of customers with mailing addresses or phone numbers in their emails, we believe that came from (1) access to our customer support inbox, (2) cross referencing and inserting data from other recent crypto leaks and, possibly (3) recent orders on our new Shopify website. We will figure out exactly what happened and we will share more details tomorrow. I’m very sorry.

NEW: Iran has, in recent minutes, launched multiple missiles and drones against vessels attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani Route. While this in and of itself is not terribly significant, it comes just a mere two days since Iran released the following statement through the IRGC: “The insistence of the American arrogant regime on provoking vessels to pass through the illegally mined strait has been increasing maritime incidents day by day. The aggressive American military must know that if this trend continues, the scope of the response will extend to the aggressors' bases in the region. This is a serious warning.” Clearly, the United States is not heeding this warning from Iran, so now it is certainly worth monitoring what, if any, Iranian escalation will be from what is obviously attempted vessel transits through Hormuz. Junocash: Private Digital Cash Quick Takes Combining Bitcoin, Monero and Zcash: Junocash combines Bitcoin’s monetary policy, Monero’s mandatory privacy model and Zcash’s zero-knowledge cryptography in a single network. One Shared Anonymity Set: Every Junocash transaction is shielded through a single Orchard pool. By contrast, only 10% of Zcash transactions have been fully shielded. A Permissionless On-Ramp: Users can acquire wrapped JUNO through DEXs on Base and convert it into native JUNO via Juno Intents, without relying on centralized exchanges. Adoption Challenges: Junocash faces an uphill battle in building liquidity and merchant adoption, particularly against established privacy coins like Monero and Zcash. Limits of Earlier Blockchain Designs The introduction of Bitcoin enabled permissionless value transfer through a distributed ledger, while introducing a rules-based monetary policy enforced by code, in contrast to the discretionary monetary policies of central banks in traditional fiat systems. However, Bitcoin transactions are public in nature, so anyone who links an address to an identity can trace their onchain activity. Privacy blockchains like Monero and Zcash were developed to bring transactional privacy to distributed networks. Monero enforces mandatory privacy that uses ring signatures to hide every transaction detail. That keeps every XMR fungible, and users can’t leak their transaction details by mistake. However, each ring signature hides the real input among only 15 decoys. This leaves transactions potentially vulnerable to statistical analyses. Monero also has perpetual inflation with no fixed supply cap, which undermines its proposition as sound money. Zcash, meanwhile, offers optional privacy where users can opt into using zero-knowledge proofs to conceal transaction details. While optionality bestows flexibility, it also results in a smaller anonymity set. Only about 29% of ZEC was held in shielded pools at the end of September 2026, so most coins remained publicly traceable. This fragmented adoption weakens privacy by enabling transaction tracing through amount and timing analyses. Junocash Brings the Pieces Together Junocash aims to morph these approaches into one design. Launched in November 2025, it's a proof-of-work blockchain that is a source-code fork of Zcash with substantial changes. 1. Privacy Junocash only implements one shielded pool, Orchard, which is the then-latest shielded pool from Zcash. Every Junocash transaction must be shielded, so there are no information leaks and every user shares the same anonymity set. Like Monero and Zcash, Junocash also supports viewing keys that allow holders to selectively disclose verifiable transaction information to auditors or any other third parties. 2. Mining In terms of mining algorithm, Junocash adopts Monero’s RandomX instead of Bitcoin’s SHA-256 or Zcash’s Equihash, both of which have become dominated by specialized ASIC miners, potentially concentrating mining power among well-capitalized operators. RandomX is built to run well on general-purpose CPUs, so anyone with ordinary computers can participate in mining. This design keeps hashrate distributed as it encourages more participation. 3. Monetary Policy Junocash follows Bitcoin and Zcash’s monetary policy with a 21 million fixed supply and a four-year halving cycle. Unlike Zcash, Junocash adopts Bitcoin’s model of allocating 100% of block subsidies to miners, without any founders’ reward or development allocation. This promotes a fairer distribution model by ensuring that all newly issued coins are earned through mining rather than reserved for insiders, placing participants on equal footing under the same issuance rules. Junocash’s design choices position itself as a form of private digital cash, as it combines Bitcoin’s monetary scarcity and permissionless nature with default privacy and CPU-friendly mining that encourages broader miner participation. Junocash Infrastructure Despite their privacy advantages, privacy-focused blockchains are often siloed from the broader crypto ecosystem. Acquiring their native coins usually involves centralized exchanges, where KYC and transaction records can compromise users' financial privacy before they even begin using the network. This is why Junocash aims to make JUNO accessible through permissionless, decentralized markets. Wrapped JUNO (wJUNO) is available as an ERC-20 token on Base, so users can acquire it through decentralized exchanges (DEXs) before converting it into native JUNO through Juno Intents. Juno Intents is a cross-chain bridge designed to extend Junocash's shielded liquidity to EVM-compatible networks without relying on a single custodian. It uses threshold cryptography to distribute custody among multiple operators, while zero-knowledge proofs verify deposit and withdrawal claims against operator-signed checkpoints. Juno Intents runs on Base for now, but it was built to work with other EVM chains too. That could open JUNO up to a much wider slice of the DeFi ecosystem. Beyond Juno Intents, Junocash is developing a suite of supporting tools to make private digital cash more accessible for everyday payments and integrations. The Juno Wallet: Non-custodial apps for iOS, Android and desktop, with private keys that stay on the device. JunoPayServer: A self-hosted, non-custodial payment processor for merchants to accept payments in JUNO. SDK: A Go toolkit that handles shielded deposits and withdrawals for exchanges and developers. Takeaways Junocash brings together several established blockchain designs into a single network. Users should bridge their assets to Base at their soonest possible convenience, including unstaking and withdrawing any funds from ZEN staking on the Horizen chain. A new ZEN staking program will commence on Base soon. Why this change? As the Horizen L3 on Base has been operational on mainnet for nearly one year, the most compelling projects being built on Horizen today use privacy technologies like zero-knowledge proofs and TEEs that do not require the operation of dedicated block space as an L3 blockchain settling to Base. With the emergence of Vela as a TEE-based confidential execution environment for private onchain finance – Base will now be utilized as the primary chain for the Horizen ecosystem. Applications currently in development by independent teams in the Horizen ecosystem will also make this transition. Additionally, we expect the pace of project development to increase in future quarters due to reduced architectural complexities with respect to bridging and cross-chain token mechanics. As part of this wind-down and migration, ZEN staking on the Horizen L3 will come to an orderly but immediate conclusion. Expect more information in the coming days about ZEN staking on Base. The Horizen DAO will recover funds and subsequently send each holder their ZEN, including unclaimed staking rewards, to the same address on Base, after a one-week public review of the snapshot. ETH balances above 0.001 ETH are returned the same way. The anticipated timeframe for return of funds is second half of November. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING SO QUICKLY? Earlier this week, Base scheduled its “Denim” upgrade, which moves Base to 200-millisecond blocks, for November 5. OP Stack chains that settle to Base, including the Horizen L3, cannot follow that change: about 40 minutes after activation the L3 can no longer include user transactions, permanently. We identified this, confirmed it on the Base Sepolia testnet where Denim is already live, and our infrastructure provider has confirmed there is no fix. We set the bridging cutoff one day earlier than hard shutdown so that the snapshot is clean and nothing is in flight when the chain stops. STAKING WILL CONTINUE ON BASE We expect to redeploy ZEN staking on Base in the coming days. The program remains funded per ZenIP-42408, so staking will resume where ZEN already lives natively, on Base. Details will follow in separate posts to come. Unstaking your ZEN from the L3 today will position you for the start of staking on Base. WHAT COMES NEXT Base will become the home chain for the Horizen ecosystem. ZEN already lives on Base natively, and the work ahead – including a compliant privacy pool with staked ZEN-powered nodes and Vela for confidential compute – does not require its own blockspace. Xinmeng Zeng, Stanford University Applied Mathematics | AI Web3 and Physical AI Xinmeng has spent the past three years in the Bay Area close to the kinds of founder conversations Atlas was created to reach. At Stanford, she is an Applied Mathematics PhD candidate. Her current research focuses on DeFi and crypto market structure, including how traders behave on blockchain-based trading venues and in perpetual futures markets. Before Stanford, she completed both her bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics at ETH Zurich in three years. Her academic work has moved across fields, from random matrix theory and combinatorics to now decentralized finance. Her life has also moved across countries and technical cultures. Xinmeng grew up across China and Switzerland, speaks Chinese, English and French, and brings a cross-border perspective to the way she meets people and builds trust. At Stanford Founders, where she previously served as VP of Finance, she became part of a graduate founder community spanning more than 1,000 builders across Stanford's seven schools. Xinmeng likes the human part of venture: sitting with founders, hearing how they think, connecting people to resources and helping ideas move from conversation into something more concrete. Peng (Endy) Xu, Yale University PhD Neuroscience | Biotech Neurotechnology and AI Peng begins with a question he has been thinking about for years: “What makes us human, and how far can humanity evolve from here?” That question led him to neuroscience. At Yale, Peng studies how aging and Alzheimer’s disease affect neuromodulatory signaling and cortical network dynamics. His broader scientific interests span consciousness, cognition and the biological basis of human intelligence, and he received a Gruber Science Fellowship upon entering Yale’s Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program. Working on Alzheimer’s disease made that broader question more concrete. If memory and cognition can deteriorate, how much can we do to preserve them, restore them and, eventually, enhance them? That question gradually pushed his interests beyond neuroscience alone and toward the convergence of AI, biotech and engineering, particularly technologies that could change how humans think, stay cognitively healthy and interact with machines. Outside the lab, Peng has increasingly focused on the people building those technologies. He leads Yale Venture Club, founded Neuro X and co-founded ISEA, working closely with researchers and students at the earliest stages of turning scientific ideas into companies. He also built Project RAW, an early founder discovery and support initiative across university and research communities. Through Project RAW, he has helped source and screen projects, run office hours, prepare teams for pitches, connect them with investors and industry partners, and support them through Demo Day and beyond. That experience shaped how he thinks about early-stage investing. For YZi Labs, Peng brings both scientific depth and the instinct to create a founder pathway around it. Atlas gives him a way to connect the work he has already been doing with deeper access to capital, mentorship and the broader YZi Labs network. “I hope to back people who are building for a world that may still be ten or twenty years away,” he says. His goal is to meet technical founders early enough that the relationship can actually matter. As a Scout, Peng is focused on founders at the frontier of biotech, neurotechnology and AI x bio — people building technologies that could redefine human cognition, extend the limits of healthy brain function and ultimately expand what humans are capable of. Hanchen Li, UC Berkeley PhD Computer Science | AI Infrastructure Agents and Payments Hanchen studies AI infrastructure, but the most interesting part of his profile is where his curiosity goes once the technical system starts touching the real world. At UC Berkeley’s Sky Computing Lab, where he is a computer science PhD student advised by Ion Stoica and Joseph Gonzalez, he works on agent infrastructure, inference, context engineering, data and evaluation. Before Berkeley, he worked on long-context LLM inference and became the first employee of Tensormesh, the company behind LMCache. Working on LMCache also pulled him outside research. He helped grow the repository from around 300 GitHub stars to 5,000, while getting hands-on experience with user interviews, distribution, hiring and industry partnerships. Over time, Hanchen became interested in a broader class of infrastructure: systems that sit underneath everything else and determine how important resources move. Compute is one of them. As intelligence becomes increasingly tied to access to compute, questions around who controls it, how it is allocated and how efficiently it can be used start to matter far beyond infrastructure itself. Payments caught his attention for a similar reason. If compute governs how intelligence can be produced and distributed, payments govern how value moves between people, companies and markets. That is where Hanchen’s curiosity goes next. Once he understands the technology, he wants to understand the system around it: who pays, who takes risk, where the bottlenecks are, and what has to be true for a new market to work. He sees YZi Labs as a platform with a long-term investment mandate, a broad technical ecosystem and the patience to study categories that do not fit neatly inside one label yet. Hanchen brings more than access to one of the strongest AI research communities in the world. He brings the habit of following an infrastructure question into the financial, operational and behavioral systems around it. As a Scout, Hanchen is looking at agent infrastructure, AI systems, payments, developer infrastructure, consumer AI and founders whose strongest insight may come from connecting AI with another market. Shawn Wang, UCLA Computational Biology | Neurotechnology Biotech and AI Shawn has been thinking about immersive virtual worlds since he was fourteen. That interest first took him into venture. As a college freshman, he saw VC as a way to get exposure to several of the technologies he cared about at once. He interned at a Hong Kong-based fund investing in infrastructure and software, and later at Verge, which focuses on healthtech software globally. He liked talking to founders and learning what they were building, eventually realizing that one day, he wanted to become a builder himself. He moved to a neuroscience lab at UCLA Health, where he worked as a software engineer on research into human memory using electrodes implanted in the brain. Then he left the lab to start his own company World Zero, building AI gaming companions that can join games, hop on calls and play alongside users.If neurotechnology could eventually change how people enter virtual worlds, Shawn sees AI characters as part of what makes those worlds feel inhabited once they are there. Building on his own also changed how he thinks about early-stage founders. As a solo founder, he found that the hardest part was sometimes not the work itself, but having no one around to calibrate the doubts when things went wrong. Working alone can turn uncertainty into an echo chamber. That is why he pays particular attention to young and unconventional founders as an Atlas Scout. Many are already building before they have had the chance to develop the networks, capital or support systems that come with years in industry. Shawn knows that gap firsthand, and through UCLA and younger founder communities, he is close to people building well before they look like conventional founders. As a Scout, Shawn is drawn to neurotechnology, computational biology, consumer AI and founders working where AI, biology and human experience meet. One User, Many Licenses: How Super Apps Are Rethinking Identity Picture a user who opens a crypto exchange app on a Monday morning to buy bitcoin. By lunch, they have swapped into a tokenized share of a US stock. By evening, they are using leverage on a NASDAQ perp, and before bed they have placed a position on an NFL game. They never leave the app, and they never log in twice. Behind the scenes, that single session touched four product lines, four regulatory regimes, and potentially four different licensed entities, each with its own rules on who is allowed in. The user sees one relationship. The platform has to prove, to several regulators at once, that it knew exactly who it was dealing with at every step. That gap between what the user sees and what the platform must answer for is quickly becoming the defining constraint on the largest consumer crypto platforms. In July 2025, perpetual futures of assets such as single-name stocks, commodities and stock indices, called RWA perps, saw trading volumes of ~$1.5B. Fast forward one year, and that figure reached ~$756B, with equity perps alone accounting for ~83% of that. Prediction markets followed a similar arc, where combined monthly trading volume across Kalshi, Polymarket and Polymarket US hit its own record of ~$72B in September 2026, a 16x increase year-over-year (YoY). Neither of these products is crypto in the traditional sense, as the former is more akin to legacy traditional finance (TradFi) brokers while the latter is akin to binary outcomes and, to an extent, sports betting. Despite that, both are increasingly offered through crypto platforms. The largest consumer-facing platforms are now becoming financial “super apps” that can offer crypto alongside equities, derivatives, payment cards and prediction markets, all under one account. This creates a different kind of identity problem, where each new product line comes with its own regulator, license and rules on who is allowed to use it. In short, one user, one app, but many licenses. This shift is already visible to the platforms building these super apps, several of whom have shared their thoughts and experiences in a series of interviews with Socure and The Block’s Research team. Jonathan Brockmeier, Chief Compliance Officer at OKX, which has expanded its product offerings beyond crypto trading into payment cards and tokenized equities, described identity as three separate decisions: Who a user is, whether they are eligible for a given product based on factors such as location, age or documentation like a passport or visa, and which licensed entity grants that specific permission, as one verified identity can span several product-level approvals across different licensed entities. Put simply, super apps have to answer three questions in order: Who is this person? Are they allowed to use this product here? Which licensed entity is granting access? Most platforms built for the first question and are now retrofitting for the other two. This primer is set to look at why identity, rather than product breadth, is becoming the biggest constraint on how far these super apps can scale further. From Exchange to Super App OKX, one of the largest crypto exchanges, has expanded into payments with OKX Pay and Card, live in Europe and Brazil, and also launched OKX Money, a stablecoin savings and spending app for emerging markets. They also have a joint venture with Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent company of the NYSE, where OKX customers will have access to NYSE tokenized equities and ICE futures. OKX is already among the largest venues for RWA perps, accounting for ~14% of all RWA perps volume between July and September 2026, behind only Binance, while holding a MiCA license that allows it to serve customers across the European Economic Area. etoro, a multi-asset trading and investing platform, reported over 4.2M funded accounts in Q2 2026, up 18% YoY. Alongside its traditional brokerage and crypto products, it also offers an etoro Money account and card, with European issuance up over 30% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ). Through its acquisition of Zengo, etoro customers can trade tokenized assets on the blockchain using the non-custodial wallet. Additionally, etoro announced plans to acquire US broker TradeZero. On the other hand, Crypto.com took a different route, becoming a regulated US venue with CFTC licenses for derivatives and prediction markets, alongside its crypto exchange and Visa card. Despite the impressive headline growth numbers, it is worth pointing out that every product line on a super app has its own identity requirements. Buying crypto, trading NASDAQ perps, betting on an NFL game and paying with a card are, in effect, onboarded under several different regimes. Examples of this can be seen when Europe’s ESMA reminded firms that perps offered to clients likely fall under existing CFD product intervention measures, meaning leverage limits, risk warnings and a ban on trading incentives. Similarly, for prediction markets, Connecticut issued cease-and-desist orders to multiple platforms, while Missouri’s Attorney General did something similar, arguing prediction markets for sports are essentially unlicensed sports betting. The current norm is that a single check at a super app’s signup confirms who a user is. In reality, it cannot confirm whether that user is eligible for a specific product, in a specific location, at a specific point in time. Read down the right-hand column and the pattern is clear. Each row asks a different question about the same person. Crypto asks who the user is and who they pay. Perps ask whether they should be using leverage. Prediction markets ask where they are standing. A single signup check can only answer the first. Nevo Lapidot, Head of Crypto Compliance at etoro, which holds licenses across the world, follows a similar process, where identity is verified at onboarding, eligibility is treated as a technical decision based on jurisdiction and product rules, and suitability draws on each customer’s risk profile, so that complex products are not offered to users with only a basic understanding of financial products. OKX, on the other hand, organizes the entire process around the license itself. While the customer sees “one relationship,” each licensed entity keeps its own record of what was checked, how and when, in order to meet its own regulatory requirements. Geography then adds another layer. etoro noted that none of its products are offered identically across every jurisdiction, with localized compliance requirements and workflows built around a core product instead. KuCoin takes a similar approach, with Edwin Wong, Vice President and Head of Risk Control at KuCoin, explaining that the exchange keeps its core onboarding flow consistent across markets while adjusting verification requirements, transaction limits, product access and monitoring rules based on a user’s location. Taken together, etoro, OKX, and KuCoin point to the same design principle. The core identity record stays constant, while eligibility, limits, and monitoring flex by product, license, and location. Identity as the Growth Lever For super apps, growth increasingly comes from cross-selling, where introducing an existing user from crypto into stocks, perps or prediction markets is far cheaper than acquiring a new user for each product. However, every new product also comes with a point of friction. A user already verified for crypto trading being asked to resubmit documents or repeat KYC processes to be able to access RWA perps is a significant hurdle for user conversion. But the pressure runs on the other side as well, where removing too much friction risks providing ineligible users with restricted products. Not to mention the fraud dimension where a super app is only as strong as its most lightly verified entry point. This leaves platforms with a three-way tradeoff between conversion, compliance, and fraud. Tightening one tends to loosen another, which is why a static, one-size-fits-all check no longer works at super app scale. OKX’s Brockmeier put it bluntly, noting that “fraud is always going to go where the lightest checks are,” and that “if the friction’s low, the fraud comes in.” Its approach is to scale friction with assessed risk, keeping the experience low-friction for verified, low-risk users and adding checks as risk rises. KuCoin described something similar, particularly with the rise of AI-generated identities that have become harder to spot. Rather than relying on photo-based verification alone, they profile users based on country, behavior and transaction patterns, flagging anomalies such as large withdrawals in the middle of the night from a user whose activity normally concentrates during the day. Socure, an AI-powered identity verification platform, argues the answer is reusable, risk-based identity, where a user is verified once, and the platform then uses signals such as device, behavioral and account history, in addition to continuous identity monitoring, to decide which additional checks, if any, are needed as that user moves into a new product. In practice, this treats each new product as a risk decision rather than a fresh onboarding, and is what Socure’s RiskOS platform does, streamlining the user experience and minimizing friction. Socure claims it verifies over 99% of identities on the first attempt, compared to the industry average of 64%. Why it matters at scale: if each new product launch triggers a fresh onboarding, cost per cross-sell rises and conversion falls. If each launch is a risk decision on an identity the platform already trusts, cross-sell cost stays low and friction stays proportional to risk. Verify Once, Unlock Many Combined monthly volume across RWA perps, Polymarket and Polymarket US, alongside Kalshi, who is a client of Socure, grew from ~$6B this time last year to over $600B in September 2026. That is a ~100x increase in twelve months. The platforms capturing that growth already hold their users’ identity. The open question is whether that identity is eligible across different product lines and licenses, or whether it has to be rebuilt every time a user opens a new tab in the app. All partners interviewed for this report broadly agree that the technology for reusable identity already exists, and that the bottleneck is now standards and trust. etoro’s Lapidot said that a reusable identity could cover a general identity verification requirement, but suitability checks are usually much more intimate with the customer and specific for their understanding of their unique offering, “that’s hard to generalize.” KuCoin’s Wong argued that national-level digital identity systems would give platforms a consistent standard and allow users to verify once to access a wider range of regulated financial products. Socure is building toward that model with Socure Pass, its reusable identity product where users verified once by a regulated entity can, with their permission, share that credential with downstream partners instead of having to repeat KYC at every platform. The platforms that win the next phase of growth will likely be those that treat identity as shared infrastructure across every license they hold.
